Fridays have a special charm, and for us, they often bring the question of what to do on the following day. With excellent weather expected, we checked the forecast and were delighted to see predictions of abundant sunshine. However, my wife was still dealing with some foot discomfort, so we decided on a tour that would be neither too high nor too long. Our intention was to enjoy beautiful views and the vibrant autumn colors without necessarily committing to a completely new route.
After evaluating our options, we chose an area that we both know and love. Previously, I had attempted a variation of a hike that we had done several times throughout different seasons in the Blauberge near Tegernsee. This particular variation would be new to my wife, and I wanted to share some views that I had discovered during my previous explorations. Additionally, I was eager to visit a specific section of the trail where numerous beech trees grow, hoping to capture some striking red and orange autumn photos.
A Relaxed Start
Since the hike wasn’t overly long, we were not in a rush to start early. This allowed us to avoid the chilly morning air and comfortably set out later. Upon arriving at the parking area, we found it not completely empty but far from crowded. We packed our gear and headed for the trail. As soon as we ventured into the forest, we were enveloped in nature for quite some time.
After a while, we left the shade of the mountain and crossed a steep hillside bathed in sunlight. We were pleased to have worn zip-off trousers and soon switched to shorts. The combination of views, sunshine, and the aroma of autumn infused the experience with a sense of joy. The distinct smell of autumn is often intense and peculiar. Yet for me, it creates a powerful connection to the season.
The Beauty of Beech Trees
Upon reaching the area with the beech trees, I was taken aback by how vibrantly red the leaves were. The ground was littered with dry leaves, and I found some joy just in hearing the crunch of leaves beneath my feet. Is it only me who loves this sound? I guess not. While I attempted to capture this beautiful scene through my camera, I regrettably didn’t manage to find a compelling composition. But it didn’t affect my mood. I knew that the location wasn’t easy for a good photo, and I at least tried!
As we ascended further, we took a break to eat and drink. As we were finishing up, another group of hikers settled nearby, engaging in friendly chatter. We then left the main trail and ventured onto a narrow, steep path – the section that was new for my wife. We crossed a small stream and began to loop back on a very narrow trail.
Enjoying the Views
Although the views were undoubtedly lovely, we found ourselves in the shade on that side of the valley. I must have hiked there earlier in the year when I scouted that part because I distinctly remembered being in the sun. The shade added a bit of chill, but we were well prepared, so it wasn’t a cause for concern. Continuing our journey, we eventually joined a forest road and later merged back onto the main track. Remarkably, we hadn’t encountered a single person since we parted from the previously mentioned group.
A Happy Conclusion
Upon returning to the car, we felt quite happy. We had enjoyed ample fresh air, lovely sunshine, and quality time together. Although I had hoped to capture more autumn photographs, I chose not to let that affect my mood. Ultimately, I had a great day in the mountains with my wife.
On our way back, we decided to stop at an inn that we usually pass by. This time, we treated ourselves to coffee and Kaiserschmarrn. We enjoyed sitting outside under a chestnut tree that had already lost most of its leaves while learning a bit about the history of the place, first mentioned in 1673.
It was a perfect ending to a wonderful hiking day.
