Last weekend wasn’t packed with activity, but that didn’t stop us from yearning for a little exploration. We weren’t quite in the mood for extensive hikes, so I let my mind drift back to a time when I had spotted an intriguing photo opportunity on a map. I thought, why not seize the day and go location scouting instead?
Fortunately, the chosen spot wasn’t much of a trek from a nearby parking area. My plan was simple: we would follow a trail along a little stream upward, with hopes of encountering a few charming waterfalls and cascades along the way.
The trail turned out to be dotted with some lovely cascades, each one more inviting than the last. Although I only snapped a few photos during our outing, I couldn’t help but feel very motivated by the possibilities arround.

Challenges as a Photographer
While the location certainly had its appeal, I also identified some challenges that I would face when trying to capture the spirit of the spot into a photo. First and foremost, the foreground! Finding a compelling foreground element while simultaneously showcasing those enchanting little ponds in the midground will undoubtedly be a challenge to me.
Then there’s the amount of water. The stream has skillfully carved its way through the rock, but as I shifted positions, the water appeared to recede into the stones, making it a bit tricky to capture that fluid allure I sought. A photo would surely beenfit from more water but well – I guess this is beyond my control.
Lastly, the chaos! Branches of all sizes cluttered the scene, creating a sense of disorder, especially in the foreground. I found myself questioning how to frame my shots without becoming overwhelmed by distractions. Especially when branches jut into the foreground.
I’m looking forward to the next visit
Despite the hurdles, I believe there’s quite some photographic potential waiting for me, especially in frostier or foggy conditions. I can imagine how those elements would enhance the atmospheric feel of the cascades. Plus, bringing along a tripod for capturing some long exposures.
In the end, even a quiet outing had its rewards. I look forward to returning to this spot, armed with new ideas, the right equipment and aa lot of time to take on those challenges.
