A Solo Mountain Adventure to Embrace the Chill

Last weekend brought a delightful opportunity for some solitude as I found myself hiking the mountains for two days. My previous post covered Sunday’s hike, but unfortunately an uncomfortable flu hit us before I could fully engage with Saturday’s adventure. Thankfully, both my wife and I have mostly recovered now, and I can share this experience with you.

Anyways – with my wife occupied with other plans, I made the decision to embark alone on that Saturday. The weather was predicted to be clear, starting the day at a about -5°C. I opted for a nearby mountain we have hiked a handful of times before – nothing dangerous but promising breathtaking views.

As I arrived at the trailhead, I quickly realized a little oversight on my part: I had checked the temperature at home, not at the starting point. The trailhead, nestled in a valley, felt significantly chillier. The temperature indicated by the car was at about -11°C. I had concerns about reaching the summit if it would stay THAT cold throughout the hike. But I couldn’t change it anyways, so I could at least give it a try.

Fortunately, I felt warmer as I ascended and when the sun started to peek through the trees! The path was easygoing, albeit a tad icy, though I chose to keep my micro spikes tucked away in my backpack for now.

I wasn’t hitting the trails neither very early nor very late, but I was still a bit surprised when I encountered a couple of hikers making their way down already. After a brief chat with one couple, I learned they had witnessed the sunrise from the summit, having begun their ascent at 4 AM! Uff well. I’m sure the sunrise was nice – but … 4am at the trailhead … 😀

As I continued up the mountain, the trail led to a quieter section where I found myself fully alone. The stillness enveloped me, and I embraced the meditative nature of my hike.

Upon reaching the last stretch, which was bare and exposed to the wind, I felt that familiar chill. Thanks to my gear, my time atop the summit remained enjoyable. I wasn’t alone for long – several groups soon appeared, snapping a few photos before swiftly moving on. I took a moment to catch my breath, appreciate the beauty surrounding me, and soak in the chilly air. I have to admit, despite the wind whipping around me, there was a joyous thrill in feeling its force and energy.

As I began my descent, I crossed paths with the groups again just below the summit. They had found a cozy spot sheltered from the wind, and I exchanged a friendly greeting before continuing down. On my way down, I switched on my microspikes and encountered more hikers making their way up. It seemed that I chose exactly the right time for my little adventure to enjoy the solitude.
